Windows Vista is much more aggressive at chasing things in the background, i.e. windows Vista ACTUALLY uses your RAM instead of letting it sit idlea.

Form my experience, Windows Vista uses Half or Ur RAM during idle periods.

When a program requests for memory, windows vista will happily give it what it needs at the expense of chancing. Hence, don't be worried that you're using up loads of RAM even when you're not running many applications.
